Argentina vs Canada Matchday Stats Preview

Argentina have won their last 10 matches against Concacaf opponents in official competitions. Additionally, they have not conceded a goal in the last six, a streak that began against Costa Rica in the 2011 CONMEBOL Copa América. The last time La Albiceleste lost to a Concacaf team in a senior tournament was in 2004, when Mexico won 1-0 in the group stage of the CONMEBOL Copa América.

Argentina have reached the semifinal in seven of the last eight major tournaments (World Cups and CONMEBOL Copa América) they competed in. The only exception was the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where La Albiceleste were eliminated in the Round of 16 by France (3-4), who went on to win the tournament.

Four players in Argentina's squad for the current CONMEBOL Copa América rank in the top 20 for most appearances for La Albiceleste: Lionel Messi (1st with 185), Ángel Di María (3rd with 143), Nicolás Otamendi (5th with 115), and the latest addition to the list, Rodrigo De Paul (20th with 67).

Under Lionel Scaloni's management, Argentina have reached the semifinal in all four major tournaments they’ve competed in (CONMEBOL Copa América 2019, 2021, 2024, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup). Additionally, they finished second in the South American Qualifiers for Qatar and currently lead the standings in the ongoing qualifiers.

Argentina have won all four penalty shootouts they have been involved in since Lionel Scaloni became their coach, eliminating Colombia (CONMEBOL Copa América 2021), the Netherlands and France (2022 FIFA World Cup), and Ecuador (CONMEBOL Copa América 2024) on penalties.

Argentina will face the same opponent twice in a single edition of the CONMEBOL Copa América for the fifth time since the current format was introduced in 1993. Two of these instances were in semifinals (Colombia in 1993 and Paraguay in 2015) and two in finals (Mexico in 1993 and Chile in 2016).

This is the second time Canada have faced a CONMEBOL opponent in the semifinal or final of an official tournament, the first being the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where they defeated Colombia in the final.

The defending CONMEBOL Copa América champions have reached the semifinal on seven previous occasions since the current format was introduced in 1993. Only two of them did not advance to the final: Colombia in 2004 (lost to Argentina) and Chile in 2019 (lost to Peru), both losing by the same score (3-0).

Alexis Mac Allister has provided two assists in the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América. Since data began being recorded in 2011, only Lionel Messi has provided three or more assists for Argentina in a single edition of the tournament (four times: 2011, 2015, 2016, and 2021).

Canada generated more expected goals than their opponents in their last three CONMEBOL Copa América matches against Venezuela, Chile, and Peru. The only team to surpass them in this metric during the tournament was Argentina in their opening match (3xG to 1.2 xG).
