RB Leipzig vs Real Madrid Matchday Stats Preview

RB Leipzig and Real Madrid met for the first time in last season’s UEFA Champions League group stages – Leipzig won 3-2 at home after losing 2-0 in Madrid.

Real Madrid have lost just one of their last 15 UEFA Champions League matches against German sides (W10 D4), though that was a 3-2 loss at RB Leipzig in last season’s competition. They’ve not been eliminated by German opponents since the 2012-13 semi-final against Borussia Dortmund.

This is RB Leipzig’s fourth appearance in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, and the first time they’re not facing an English opponent in the round of 16. They eliminated Tottenham en route to reaching the semi-final in 2019-20, before being knocked by Liverpool in 2020-21 and Man City last season.

Real Madrid have progressed from 11 of their last 13 round of 16 ties in the UEFA Champions League, reaching at least the semi-final in each of the last three campaigns since going at this stage to Manchester City in 2019-20.

RB Leipzig haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 13 UEFA Champions League home games, since beating Istanbul Basaksehir 2-0 in October 2020. However, they’ve only failed to score in one of their 20 games in the competition specifically at the Red Bull Arena, finding the net in each of their last 16.

Real Madrid won all six of their games in the group stage this season – they last had a longer winning run in the UEFA Champions League between April 2014 and February 2015 (10).

Real Madrid and RB Leipzig are the two teams who have scored the most goals from fast breaks (4) in the UEFA Champions League this season, while they’re also joint-top together for shots produced following fast breaks (11).

Loïs Openda has scored four goals for RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League this season, with only Christopher Nkunku (7 in 2021-22) ever netting more in a single campaign for the German side.

Jude Bellingham has either scored or assisted in all five of his UEFA Champions League appearances for Real Madrid so far. With four goals and three assists to his name, no player has been involved in more goals in the competition than the young Englishman so far this term.

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham leads all players in the UEFA Champions League this season for chances created following a carry (9) and via a line-breaking pass (6). Indeed, no player has created more chances from open play in the competition overall this term than Bellingham (15).
