Newcastle United vs Luton Town Match Stats Preview

This is the first time Newcastle are hosting Luton in a league match since September 1992, beating them 2-0 in the second tier under Kevin Keegan.

Luton are looking to complete a league double against Newcastle for the first time since 1937-38. However, they’re winless in their last 21 league visits to the Magpies (D5 L16).

Newcastle have lost just one of their last 17 Premier League games against promoted sides (W9 D7), though it was their most recent match in the reverse fixture against Luton. Indeed, Luton could be just the second promoted side to do the double over the Magpies in the last seven seasons, after Leeds in 2020-21.

Newcastle have lost their last two Premier League home games, as many as in their previous 16 at St James’ Park (W13 D1). They last lost three in a row in January/February 2021 under Steve Bruce.

Luton have won three of their last five Premier League matches (D1 L1), more than they managed in their first 16 league games this season (W2 D3 L11). They are averaging 2.2 goals in these games (11 in 5 games), double their average in their first 16 games (1.1, 17 goals).

Newcastle halted a run of four successive Premier League defeats with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Tuesday, last enjoying successive league wins against Chelsea and Manchester United in November/December.

None of Luton Town’s first 24 Premier League goals were scored inside the first 15 minutes, then they netted twice in the opening 137 seconds against Brighton on Tuesday. It was the earliest any side had gone 2-0 up in a Premier League game since Leicester vs Derby in April 1998 (first two minutes).

Anthony Gordon has been involved in seven goals in his last seven Premier League home games for Newcastle, scoring five and assisting two. The only game he hasn’t been directly involved in a goal in this run was their 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Carlton Morris is the only Luton player to score more than once away from home in the Premier League this season (3). Indeed, Luton’s joint top scorer on the road this term is ‘own goals’, with the Hatters benefitting from three of these in away games so far.

Luton’s Elijah Adebayo has scored six goals in his last seven Premier League appearances and netted the Hatters’ first top-flight hat-trick since September 1990 (Lars Elstrup vs Norwich) in their 4-0 win over Brighton.
