Newcastle United vs Chelsea Match Stats Preview

Newcastle avoided defeat in both Premier League meetings with Chelsea last season (W1 D1), having lost seven of their previous eight against the Blues. They last had a longer unbeaten run against them between April 1994 and September 1995 (W2 D2).

Chelsea have lost 13 Premier League away games against Newcastle (W9 D6), only losing more at Arsenal and Liverpool (15 each) in the competition.

Chelsea have won more Premier League points against teams starting the day above them in the table this season (8 – W2 D2 L1) than they did in the entirety of last season (5 – W0 D5 L11).

Newcastle United have won their last four home Premier League matches without conceding a single goal. The Magpies haven’t won five top-flight home games in a row without conceding since February 1907.

Chelsea have netted exactly four goals in three of their last five Premier League games (4-1 vs Burnley, 4-1 vs Spurs, 4-4 vs Man City), having not scored four times in any of their previous 53 games beforehand. The Blues last scored 4+ goals in three games in a row between May and August 2010.

Since the start of October, Chelsea’s Premier League matches have seen 26 goals scored (16 for, 10 against), the most of any club. There have also been more shots on target (62) in their games than any other team in that time, while the xG generated by both Chelsea and their opponents is also outright top (22.8).

Newcastle United are yet to lose a single Saturday 3pm Premier League kick off under manager Eddie Howe (W12 D6). However, the last side to beat the Magpies in this slot were Chelsea at St James’ Park back in October 2021.

After scoring just two goals from 24 shots in his first nine Premier League appearances (8% conversion rate), Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson has scored with four of nine attempts in his last two games (44%). He’s also been booked in seven of his nine starts, which is already the most yellows by any Premier League player across their first 10 starts in the competition’s history.

Nick Pope has kept 19 clean sheets in 49 Premier League games for Newcastle, already the most by a goalkeeper in their first 50 starts for the Magpies in the competition. Should he play and keep a clean sheet here, he’d be the first English keeper with 20+ shutouts in his first 50 starts for a club since Nigel Martyn for Leeds between 1996 and 1997 (23).

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has been involved in six goals in his last five Premier League appearances (4 goals, 2 assists), with all four of his goals coming from the penalty spot. Palmer is one of only two players in Premier League history to score a penalty in four out of a span of five appearances, along with Riyad Mahrez (Dec 2021 – Feb 2022 for Man City).
