Napoli vs AC Milan UEFA Champions League Match Stats Preview

Napoli have already lost twice to Milan in April, losing 4-0 in Serie A at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and 1-0 at San Siro in the first leg of this tie. The last side to beat them three times in one season was Lazio in 1994-95.

Milan have won their last three away matches against Napoli, all in Serie A, their joint longest away winning run against them, including a 4-0 victory earlier this month. The last team they beat twice away from home in a season was Sampdoria in 2015-16.

Milan hold a 1-0 lead from the first leg against Napoli, last reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-final in 2006-07. They’ve only been eliminated twice after winning the first leg of a knockout tie – in 2003-04 vs Deportivo de La Coruña in the quarter-final (4-1 first leg, 0-4 second leg) and 2012-13 vs Barcelona in the last 16 (2-0 first leg, 0-4 second leg).

Napoli are unbeaten in their last 12 home UEFA Champions League matches (W9 D3) since a 4-2 defeat to Man City in November 2017. They’ve won their four home games this season, scoring at least three goals in each victory.

Milan have kept a clean sheet in their last five UEFA Champions League matches, the best run by a side since Man City in 2020-21 (seven in a row). The Rossoneri have only had one longer run in the competition, going seven without conceding during the 2004-05 campaign on their way to reaching the final.

Napoli have been eliminated from their last 10 UEFA European knockout ties after losing the first leg, last progressing to the next round after suffering a first leg deficit in the 1988-89 UEFA Cup quarter-final vs Juventus, overturning a 2-0 first leg defeat to win 3-2 on aggregate and go on and win the tournament that year.

Piotr Zielinski has been involved in five goals in four home UEFA Champions League appearances for Napoli this season (3 goals, 2 assists), scoring or assisting every 49 minutes. The only Napoli player with more goals and assists at Diego Armando Maradona in a Champions League campaign was Edinson Cavani in 2011-12 (4 goals, 2 assists).

Olivier Giroud has been directly involved in six goals in nine appearances in the UEFA Champions League this season (four goals and two assists) – the most by a Milan player in a single campaign since Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2011-12 (9 – five goals and four assists).

Stanislav Lobotka has completed 352 passes under pressure in the UEFA Champions League this season, which is 95 more than the Napoli player with the next-most (Giovanni Di Lorenzo, 257). Lobotka’s pass completion rate under pressure (90.3%) is also the best of any Napoli player to have played 300+ minutes in the competition this term.

Only Vinícius Júnior (36) has completed more dribbles than Milan’s Rafael Leão (33) in the UEFA Champions League this term, however Leão has completed more than any other player in the knockout stages of this season’s tournament (18). Leão’s 33 completed dribbles are the most by a Milan player in a single season since Kaká in 2004-05 (37).
