Werder Bremen vs Köln Bundesliga Match Preview or Key Statistics 📰
This will be the 95th Bundesliga meeting between 1. FC Köln and Werder Bremen – the Billy Goats haven’t faced any other side as often in the top flight. So far, both sides have won 35 games each (24 draws).
Werder’s 6-1 win over Köln on matchday 34 of last season saw them avoid automatic relegation and secure the relegation play-off position. It was their biggest Bundesliga win in the last 11 years (since winning 6-0 at Freiburg in November 2009).
Bremen have won two of their last three Bundesliga games against Köln (L1), having gone eight games in a row without tasting victory prior to this. At home, Werder have only lost one of their last 15 matches vs. Köln (W11, D3): 1-0 in October 2014.
Despite having just 28% possession in Frankfurt (their lowest Bundesliga average in 2020), Bremen drew 1-1. They are now unbeaten in five Bundesliga games (W2, D3), something they last managed in November 2019.
For the second successive league game, Werder dropped points after going ahead – before this run, they hadn’t dropped a single point after taking the lead in 2020.
Bremen have taken seven points from their last four Bundesliga home games (including that 6-1 win over Köln last season), which is more than they managed from their first 16 home matches in 2019/20 (6).
According to the Expected Goals model, Köln should have 9.4 goals in 2020/21, however they have only netted six times. Werder, on the other hand, have scored 1.7 more goals than expected. Köln’s opponents have also scored 11 goals, having only been expected to score 8.6 (a difference of +2.4).
Köln lost 2-1 against Bayern, and are now without a win in 16 Bundesliga matches (D6, L10). They have only ever endured a longer winless run in 2005/06 (18 games, eventually relegated).
Bayern only managed seven shots against Köln, their fewest in a Bundesliga game under Hansi Flick. Despite this, the Billy Goats haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 17 league outings – their longest such run since 1974 (19).
Köln were again punished via a penalty against Bayern, the fourth they have given away this season. They only gave away six across the whole of last season.
