Midtjylland vs Ajax UEFA Champions League Match Preview or Key Statistics 📊
FC Midtjylland and Ajax have never previously faced in any European competition.
This will be FC Midtjylland’s first ever European game against Dutch opponents, while Ajax last faced a Danish team in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League, progressing 3-2 on aggregate in the Last 16.
Ajax have only won one of their four away European matches in Denmark, winning 2-1 in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League qualifying, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scoring twice.
This is the first ever UEFA Champions League meeting between a Danish and Dutch club: in the European Cup, it hasn’t happened since October 1963, when PSV won 7-1 against Esbjerg fB, eliminating them 11-4 on aggregate in the first round.
FC Midtjylland could become only the fifth team to lose their first three games in the UEFA Champions League without scoring a goal, and the most recent to do so since Bursaspor in 2010-11.
Since the start of the 2018-19 season, Ajax have gone unbeaten in their seven away games in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League (W3 D4), scoring at least two goals in each of the last five.
FC Midtjylland have the highest expected goals total of any of the three teams yet to score in the UEFA Champions League this season (2.08), with the Danish side failing to find the net with any of their 14 shots so far.
Lassina Traoré netted his first UEFA Champions League goal for Ajax on MD2, and could become only the third teenager to score in consecutive appearances in the competition for the Dutch side, after Patrick Kluivert in 1995 and Rafael van der Vaart in 2002.
Pione Sisto has scored in four of his last seven starts for FC Midtjylland in major European competition (excl. qualifiers), however his last such goal came back in February 2016 in the UEFA Europa League (v Manchester United).
Since making his debut in the competition for Ajax in September 2018, Dusan Tadic has been directly involved in more UEFA Champions League goals than any other player for the club (14 – seven goals and seven assists).
