This is the first ever European meeting between RB Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow. RB Salzburg's only previous encounters with Russian opponents was in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League group stage, when they failed to win either match against FK Krasnodar (D1 L1).
This will be Lokomotiv Moscow's fifth away match in Austria in all European competitions, winning two of the previous four (D1 L1), including their most recent trip in September 2011 in the UEFA Europa League, 2-1 vs Sturm Graz.
FC Red Bull Salzburg are competing in their second consecutive UEFA Champions League tournament, after waiting 25 years for their second appearance last season -they have gone out in the group stage on both occasions (1994/95 and 2019/20).
Since September 2018, Lokomotiv Moscow have lost more UEFA Champions League games than any other club, losing 10 of their 12 group stage games in that time (W2).
FC Red Bull Salzburg have won just one of their six home UEFA Champions League matches (D2 L3), failing to score in four of those.
Their one win, however, saw Salzburg score six goals in a 6-2 hammering of KRC Genk last season. FC Red Bull Salzburg netted 16 goals in the UEFA Champions League group stage last season but were eliminated in 3rd place, only the second team to score as many as 16 and be eliminated after Chelsea in 2012/13.
Lokomotiv Moscow have won just one of their last 13 away UEFA Champions League matches (D2 L 10), though it was on MD1 last season at Bayer Leverkusen, a 2-1 win. Of the 16 goals scored by FC Red Bull Salzburg in last season's UEFA Champions League, only three were by players currently at the club (Szoboszlai, Daka and Ulmer).
The others were scored by Erling Haaland (8, now Borussia Dortmund), Hwang Hee-chan (3, now RB Leipzig) and Takumi Minamino (2, now Liverpool). Lokomotiv manager Marko Nikolic is the 8th Serbian manager to take charge of a UEFA Champions League match -Serbian managers have won just 13 of their 59 matches between them (22%), with Radomir Antic accounting for seven of those.
