Burnley have endured a disappointing start to the season in the Premier League, losing both of their opening matches, including their last outing against Southampton. However, they have been successful in the EFL Cup thus far, defeating Sheffield United on penalties and Millwall to advance. Tests do not come tougher than facing City and the Clarets will have to be flawless against Pep Guardiola's men.
Manchester City suffered a humbling defeat at the weekend at the hands of Leicester City in the Premier League. Guardiola conceded five goals for the first time as a manager as Jamie Vardy ran rampant. City edged out Bournemouth on home soil in their last EFL Cup contest to advance to the fourth round. Their defensive lapses will give the Spaniard cause for concern against Burnley tonight.
BURNLEY (4-4-2): Bailey Peacock-Farrell; Matt Lowton, Kyle Long, James Tarkowski, Charlie Taylor; Dwight McNeil, Josh Brownhill, Ashley Westwood, Erik Pieters; Matej Vydra, Ashley Barnes.
BURNLEY SUBS: Chris Wood, Will Norris, Phil Bardsley, Jimmy Dunne, Josh Benson, Mace Goodridge, Anthony Driscoll-Glennon.
MANCHESTER CITY (4-2-3-1): Zack Steffen; Kyle Walker, Fernandinho, Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy; Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri; Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, Ferran Torres; Cole Palmer.
MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Nathan Ake, Bernardo Silva, Ederson, Phil Foden, Liam Delap, Tommy Doyle, Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
The Clarets are boosted by the return of both Tarkowski and Barnes from injury, taking their place in the starting line-up for the first time this season. Peacock-Farrell comes into the side between the sticks in place of Nick Pope. Lowton replaces Bardsley, while Tarkowski slots into the back four ahead of Dunne. Pieters comes into the midfield for Dale Stephens, while Wood drops to the bench to accomodate Barnes.
Guardiola has handed a full debut to striker Palmer to lead the line this evening. The 18-year-old is one of four changes to the side from City's defeat against Leicester. Steffen starts in goal in place of Ederson, and Laporte comes into the back four in place of Ake. Eric Garcia misses out so Fernandinho drops back into the defence. Torres and Palmer come into the fold in the final third as Foden drops to the bench. Silva is available on the bench.
Burnley and Manchester City have only met in the League Cup once before, with City winning 6-0 across two legs in the first round in 1999-2000.
