When it enters into force, many players convicted of tax fraud could be banned from entering the United Kingdom in both the Champions League and the European Championship.
There is less than a month left before Brexit is consumed. The United Kingdom will leave the European Union and this measure will directly affect football, which could be resentful when it comes to transferring players, especially when it is the youngest.
But those not so young can also be affected by Brexit, as the new law could prevent more than one player from entering the United Kingdom. Until now the rule said that a person from the European Union with a criminal conviction can travel to the United Kingdom as long as it is not considered to be a threat to national security, but when it enters into force, a person from the EU with a conviction I could not travel there.
Given that there are a lot of players who have been convicted at some point for tax fraud, these players could not enter England since the day of the disconnection and the consequences could already be seen in the round of 16 of the Champions League, as well as the following phases, since if they were previously allowed to travel because they were citizens of the European Union, now they would not be allowed. Andrew Osbourne , immigration lawyer of the Lewis Silkin firm , has explained it in several English media: "If you are an EU citizen and you have a conviction or sentence to imprisonment imposed (even if suspended) you are prohibited from entering the Kingdom United".
In a post-Brexit scenario, players like Messi (sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud) , Marcelo (four months) , Diego Costa (recently found guilty) or Cristiano Ronaldo (23 months) could not play any League match. Champions (or Europa League in a hypothetical future) as visitors if Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid or Juventus were framed with a team from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales.
The same problem would have any player in these conditions to play a Eurocup or World Cup. In fact, some rounds, and especially the final of the 2020 Eurocup, are held in England, so the player who reached that stage with his selection could miss the Wembley final , something that could affect teams like Spain or Portugal .
